Your heating and cooling system is a major source of energy use. The installation of a high efficiency heating and cooling system such as the XL19i by TRANE or the Clean Effects Clean Air System also by TRANE will provide optimal results that you can depend on for a lifetime. |

Your furnace thermostat should be at 68 degrees or lower, and the air-conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees or higher depending on weather conditions. Three to five percent more energy is used for each degree the furnace is set above 68 degrees and for each degree the air conditioner is set below 78 degrees. |

Your water heater thermostat should be set at 140 degrees or "normal" if you have a dishwasher. Otherwise, set it at 120 degrees or "low." Check your dishwasher to see if you can use 120 degree water. In addition, be sure to follow the manufacturers' direction on yearly maintenance to extend the life of your unit. |

|
Be sure to fix defective plumbing or dripping faucets. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month. That not only increases water bills, but also increases the gas or electric bill for heating the water. |

Your fireplace is a wonderful addition to your home on a cold winter night. However, it can also be a serious waste of energy if not proper maintained. Be sure to keep the damper closed unless a fire is going. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter; it allows warm air to go right up the chimney. When you use the fireplace, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox (if provided) or open the nearest window slightly - approximately 1 inch - and close doors leading into the room. Lower the thermostat setting to between 50° and 55°F. If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue. If you do use the fireplace, install tempered glass doors and a heat-air exchange system that blows warmed air back into the room. Check the seal on the fireplace flue damper and make it as snug as possible. Also, consider purchasing grates made of C-shaped metal tubes to draw cool room air into the fireplace and circulate warm air back into the room. Adding caulking around the fireplace hearth will also add to block wasted air loss. |

You can also insulate ceilings to R-30 standards if your attic has less than R-19. |
11.
|
Windows, doors and anywhere air leaks in or out should also be caulked to prevent air from leaking. Do not caulk around water heater and furnace exhaust pipes. In addition, weather stripping should be utilized around windows and doors. |
| 12. |
Old windows can be replaced with new high performance dual pane windows. |
13.
|
When washing dishes, wash only full loads in a dishwasher and use the shortest cycle that will get your dishes clean. If operating instructions allow, turn off the dishwasher before the drying cycle, open the door and let the dishes dry naturally. |
14.
|
Consider installing shades, awnings or sunscreens on windows facing south and/or west to block summer light. In the winter, open shades on sunny days to help warm rooms. |
